What Does a Market Dip Mean for Your SIP? September 2026 AMFI Data Explained
AMFI data released on October 12 showed the mutual fund industry's assets under management fell 5.1% in September 2026, from Rs 87.08 lakh crore to Rs 82.64 lakh crore. Reports link this to heavy debt fund outflows and mark-to-market losses, and note that equity markets were weak during the month. When values dip, many investors ask: should I pause my SIP?
What the numbers showed
Monthly SIP contributions hit a record Rs 32,490 crore in September, up from Rs 32,297 crore in August.
Equity fund schemes saw net inflows of Rs 38,307 crore, about 31% higher than August.
The industry as a whole saw net outflows of about Rs 1.33 lakh crore, with debt funds seeing the largest outflows (about Rs 1.83 lakh crore, per Fortune India).
The SIP stoppage ratio eased to 79.3% from 81% in August. This compares SIPs discontinued or matured with new SIPs registered in the month, so it is not the same as the share of investors who quit.

Why a dip does not change what an SIP does
An SIP buys a fixed rupee amount every month. When the NAV is lower, the same amount buys more units. When it is higher, it buys fewer. Over time this averages your purchase cost. It does not remove risk, and it does not promise a profit. Fund values can stay low for long periods.
Questions worth asking before changing an SIP
1) Has my goal or time horizon changed? If the goal is five or more years away, a short fall in value is a different matter from a change in the goal.
2) Is the SIP amount still affordable? Stopping because of cash flow is a real reason. Stopping only because of a headline is worth a second look.
3) Does the fund still fit my risk comfort? If a dip kept you awake, that is useful information about your risk comfort.
4) Do I understand the difference between stopping and redeeming? Stopping an SIP only ends future instalments. Units you already hold stay invested, and exit load or tax does not apply just because you stop. Exit load and tax apply only if you redeem (sell) units, and they depend on the fund type and holding period. Check the scheme documents.
